How to Unlock Gear in Caretakers

The verified route to unlocking gear in Caretakers: earn Money from tasks, buy at the lobby shop, then assign your gear in the Loadout.

Gear in Caretakers unlocks by buying it at the shop in the lobby with Money, then assigning it to a gear slot in your Loadout. That is the only route recorded gameplay shows: a first-time player was shut out of buying entirely while broke — "We got shop here. I am broke, so I can't do that" — and could only buy once task payouts came in, while a second recorded session shows completed purchases actually delivering gear, a gear slot and Loadout assignments.

Neither session shows a level, quest or achievement unlock for gear. That doesn't prove the game has no other method, but the shop is the route you can act on right now.

Where gear unlocks are accessed

The shop stands in the lobby, and it carries two kinds of listings:

  • Equipment items, bought individually against your Money balance: a revive ("The revive is pretty cool"), a vanish-style mask ("Put it on and vanish from bomb for a few seconds"), a sprint drink ("Drink it to sprint faster"), a slip trap ("Toss a pee on the floor. Anyone who steps on it slips"), a task-helper item ("quite good as well if you need your task done") and a stim ("I can use a stem").
  • Products and bundles: "Gear bundle" (described only as "there's different gear"), "Extra gear slot", "Double cash", "Spawn entity" and a "Supporter bundle".

The Money gate is enforced, not cosmetic. The broke player's purchase attempts failed outright ("Why can't I buy?"), and only after he repaired the broadcast and reported "Got some money from that" did items like the vanish mask and revive shots become buyable ("Okay, I can buy..."). One practical note: no recorded listing ever displays its price, so the working target is simply to keep earning until the purchase goes through. The only cost hint on record is "Double cash" being beyond one player's balance at that moment ("maybe one day") — it shows listings vary, not by how much.

Earn the Money first

Tasks pay. Repairing the broadcast paid out on camera, and the other task types shown in recorded rounds — repairing the generator, turning valves, finding tapes, fixing gas leaks, hacking terminals — are how you stockpile Money between purchases. The fuller earning picture is in the how to get money guide.

Verified gear requirements

Your default Loadout carries one gear item. Everything beyond that has to be bought and assigned. Here is what the recorded play actually confirms:

GearVerified unlock routeWhat the record shows
Entity maskBuy the Supporter bundle → a gear slot comes with it → assign the mask in LoadoutFull chain on camera; the mask banishes entities when worn in a round
TaserBuy the Extra gear slot → second slot appears → assign in Loadout"Boom. Two gear slots... Boom. Second slot. Taser"; "Firing at an entity will stun them for a few seconds"
Individual Equipment (revive, vanish mask, sprint drink, slip trap, task-helper, stim)Buy from the shop's Equipment section with MoneyListings browsed against a Money balance; one player's buy options opened up after a task payout
Gear bundleListed in the shop as containing "different gear"Never purchased on record; its contents are not itemized, so what it delivers is unconfirmed
ScannerNot capturedSeen working in a round — "Scans all objects on the map and highlights them all" — but the recorded sessions never show how it was obtained

Whether the entity mask is exclusive to the Supporter bundle is unknown: the bundle's contents were never itemized, the mask simply became available right after that purchase.

Step-by-step: unlocking the entity mask

This is the one complete acquisition-to-assignment chain on record:

  1. Earn Money by completing tasks during rounds — repairing the broadcast paid out on camera.
  2. Go to the shop in the lobby.
  3. Buy the Supporter bundle. The purchase registers ("we got the ro supporter") and "gives us some stuff we can use".
  4. Confirm the purchase included a gear slot ("I've got like a gear slot").
  5. Open the Loadout and assign the entity mask to that slot ("we'll just put the entity mask on, I guess, and we can use that").
  6. Done — the mask is owned and slotted, ready for your next round.

That is where unlocking ends. The gear does nothing until it is actually put on during a round: the same player died carrying the assigned mask because "I DIDN'T KNOW I had to put it actually on." Wearing gear mid-round belongs to the how to equip gear guide.

Carrying a second item: the Extra gear slot

To hold two gear items at once, one purchase stands between you and the extra slot:

  1. Buy the Extra gear slot at the shop ("I 100% want an extra gear slot... Boom. Two gear slots.").
  2. Open the Loadout and fill the new slot ("Right. Load out. Boom. Second slot. Taser.").
  3. Select the item — the Taser is the named second item shown completing this chain, and its effect reads "Firing at an entity will stun them for a few seconds".

Two slots is what the record shows; whether more exist beyond that isn't documented.

What unlocks persist or reset

Within a recorded session, unlocks are not round-limited. Gear bought mid-session survives later rounds:

  • The Extra gear slot and the Taser assigned to it stayed in place through subsequent rounds.
  • The entity mask was put on again in later rounds ("Put the mask on and run.").
  • Another item was kept ready across rounds ("I'm keeping this out just in case.").
  • The scanner was still being used rounds after it first appeared.

The honest limit: all of this comes from one continuous sitting, and nothing recorded crosses a session boundary — so whether gear, slots and bundle items remain owned after you quit and come back is not established. It's also unstated whether consumables like the revive, vanish mask or stim get used up and need repurchasing.

Once the item is yours

When a piece of gear sits in a Loadout slot, it's available to equip, and the next thing to learn is putting it on at the right moment — the equipping guide picks up exactly there. For a rundown of what each item does, see the gear list, or check the best gear picks if you're deciding what to save for first.

One last thing worth knowing: both recorded sessions date from the game's release window ("literally just released"), so shop offerings and prices are worth rechecking after updates.
