Caretakers How to Escape: Exit Conditions and Final Steps

Escape a Survival Mode round in Caretakers: complete your assigned tasks, survive the countdown, follow the on-screen arrow to the opened exit, and move through it.

Escaping a round of Survival Mode in Caretakers comes down to three conditions lining up: your assigned objectives are finished, the survive countdown has run out, and the exit has opened. Once the game announces the exit is open, follow the on-screen arrow to it and move through — that is the entire final escape. The official game page compresses the win condition into one line: "Complete objectives to escape."

This guide covers what must be true before you can leave, what the final escape actually looks like on screen, and how much of it changes between maps.

Conditions that must be true before you can escape

1. All of your tasks are done. In observed runs, no one left the map early. One group spelled it out mid-round: "We have to do our tasks unless we can't... escape." A player who finished everything except one unfindable document reported "No, I can't escape" when the clock mattered most, and another summed up a lost run with "I couldn't escape because you wanted me to finish my dumb task."

One honest caveat: the evidence doesn't settle whether the game checks each player's personal task list or one shared team pool. What is clear is that task volume scales with lobby size — a player in a small lobby complained "I've got so many tasks to do because I'm not playing with many people," and noted that someone joining mid-session "take[s] a task off you." Practically, clear your own task list rather than assuming teammates' progress covers you. For task-by-task help, see the objectives guide.

2. The survive countdown has run out. Finishing tasks does not open the exit on the spot. Players consistently describe a waiting phase that starts right after: "Now I got to wait until the exit opens. See, I got to survive now." How long it lasts is not fixed — two groups estimated "we got to survive for like another 60 seconds" and "like a minute left until we can escape," while another run showed a literal "Survive for 3 minutes" task. One player who blitzed the objectives still found "the exit still wasn't open for a while," so plan around the timer instead of an instant exit.

3. The exit opens — and the game says so. You don't have to guess when the wait ends. The opening is an announced, visible state change: "Exit opens. Exit open."

Surviving the countdown

The entity does not pause while you wait, and it does not stop once the exit opens either — observed escapes were close runs against a fast pursuer. The most useful habit comes straight from an experienced player: once you're in the survive phase, stage yourself near an escape option instead of roaming. He camped "right by the exit. You've got a door and you've also got an escape route," and recommends holding a spot by "a bit you can slide through," because "if you hear him, then you can just do like a little whoop and go through."

In other words: pick a defensible position with a door or a crawl-through gap near the exit area, listen for the entity, and slip through your escape option when it approaches. More general staying-alive advice lives in the survival tips guide, and entity-specific behavior in the entities guide.

The final escape, step by step

  1. Wait for the open announcement. Don't run for the door early — with tasks incomplete the exit stays locked, and before the countdown ends it hasn't spawned a way out yet.
  2. Follow the on-screen arrow. Once the exit phase begins, the HUD arrow points the way to the goal. A player who escaped admitted, "I didn't know that arrow took me to the goal," and said knowing it "makes it a bit easier." The arrow is the reliable finder — don't rely on memorizing a spot in advance.
  3. Move through the exit. Exits take different physical forms — one run found a door with an escape route beside it, another a vent ("I couldn't see where the exit the vent was"), another a slide-under gap. In every case the escape was completed by going through it. No interact prompt or keybind is documented anywhere in observed play; players simply left: "I'm out of there. I'm gone."
  4. Confirm with the Escaped message. The round ends with a clear "Escaped" confirmation. Escapes tally per player — "Hey, two escapes" — and feed a persistent "Most escapes" leaderboard. As one first-timer put it: "Did I escape? I escaped. First game on and I win."

Escaping also pays out: the official description lists "Earn money from objectives and escapes" alongside objectives as the mode's income sources.

Do exits differ between maps?

The escape requirements were consistent in every observed run: tasks done, survive countdown finished, exit opens. What differed was the exit's physical form — a door, a vent, a slide-under — and one player hunting for "a slider exit" found none where he expected. The official page confirms the game has "multiple unsettling locations" with different entities per map, but no source ties any observed exit description to a named map or placement. Map-by-map exit comparisons are therefore unverified: trust the arrow when the exit opens, and use the map routes guide to shorten the general run across each layout.

One last note: the game is flagged "GAME IS IN BETA, EXPECT BUGS!" — so treat countdown lengths, announcements and exit behavior as things that can shift after patches.

Quick answers

Can you escape with tasks left? In every observed run, no — escape stayed locked until the task list was complete, even when only one task remained.

How long is the survive countdown? No single value applies. Observed rounds ranged from roughly a minute to a 3-minute "Survive" task, so assume it varies by round and map.

Is the exit always in the same place? That's not documented. Exit forms differ between runs, and the on-screen arrow — not memory — is the dependable guide once the exit opens.

Do you need to press a key to escape? No interact keybind appears in observed play; moving through the opened exit ended the round with the "Escaped" confirmation.
