Caretakers Lore Explained: What the Game Actually Reveals

Caretakers lore explained from what the Roblox horror game actually shows: a failed facility, safes, hidden tapes, a robotic hunter — and where evidence stops.

Caretakers tells its story through objects rather than cutscenes. The clearest narrative clue in the released build is a pair of collectibles: rounds task you to "unlock safes and collect two documents" and to find tapes hidden around the map, while the game's own description advertises "Discover hidden secrets and lore" as a feature of the live mode. Those safes and tapes are the story channel. What they actually say — and why the facility around them fell apart — is not shown anywhere in the current build, and the story-focused Story Mode is announced as "coming soon," not playable. Everything below is what the game explicitly reveals so far, and exactly where the evidence stops.

The setting the game shows you

Every recorded round takes place in one large industrial facility whose broken systems define play. Objectives change from round to round but stay in one family: "Restore comms and stabilize pressure," "unlock safes and collect two documents," "repair the broadcast," "repair generator. Turn the valves. Find the tapes," and gas-leak rounds that ask you to shut off gas and close tank valves. Completing the last task opens the exit, and full runs are winnable — one group confirms "we beat it at least."

Read as a setting rather than a chore list, that loop says something specific. This is a staffed, system-rich site — communications, pressure, gas, broadcast, power — and every one of those systems is down at once. The game is called Caretakers, and the work is caretaking: the reading these clues support is that you play the facility's own staff, holding a dying building together just long enough to escape it.

The site hardware fills in more of the picture. The map has a camera system that nobody in or out of the game explains ("They got cameras for what?"), hiding lockers fitted with oxygen ("Hold your breath"), and vents that players pass through with a forced slide rather than a crawl. Outside the rounds, the lobby holds a shop and a row of arcade machines you can't play — a workplace social space with the amusements switched off. For the round-to-round mechanics themselves, the survival side of the game has its own dedicated page on Caretakers survival mode.

The story clues you can collect in a round

ClueWhat you observe in playWhat it suggests
Locked safes and documentsObjectives ask you to unlock safes and collect documents; one player expects a found document to tell him "where the safe is"The site keeps records behind locks, and recovering them is part of the job
Spoken number sequencesSequences like "4 9 5 1" and "0 7 2 1" are heard aloud during roundsNumbers clearly matter somewhere — but nothing in play labels them as safe codes, so their function is unconfirmed
Hidden tapesTapes are a find objective — "Find four tapes" in one round, "I found all three tapes" in another — and one player notes "it highlights it when you're near it, I think"Placed, discoverable collectibles rather than random pickup clutter
The robotic hunterA machine that snaps necks and downs players, opens closed doors, and seals players in a room it locks; players call it "a robot" and describe it as extremely fastThe facility's own technology as the threat, not an outside intruder
Site hardwareCameras, oxygen lockers, vents, a lobby shop and dead arcadesA monitored, sealed, maintained workplace that has stopped being maintained

One boundary matters as much as any entry in that table: no source quotes what any document or tape actually says. The lore carriers are confirmed; their contents are not.

What the clues add up to

Taken together, the observable clues support one bounded reading: Caretakers is set in a staffed industrial facility whose systems failed, whose machines now hunt the staff, and whose backstory is meant to be pieced together from collectibles instead of told in cutscenes. That is the whole interpretation the current evidence carries. The build does not yet reveal:

  • what any tape or document says
  • what caused the failure
  • who built or ran the facility
  • what the entities are — or how many exist; the game promises "Survive different entities," but only the one robotic hunter appears in recorded play
  • what the spoken number sequences are for

Those are the first questions any new lore content will need to answer.

Is the hunter actually Bon?

Two creators independently read the hunter's design as Bon, the tall blue rabbit of The Walten Files: "At least I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be Bon... It looks like him," says one, and another, after looking the series up on his phone, concludes "this is obviously I guess a fan for for that." That is player recognition, not an in-game fact. Nothing in the current build names the entity or ties the plot to The Walten Files; the wider connection rests on fans recognizing the design and on a fan "LEAKS" caption on Instagram, which is not a developer statement. Treat the resemblance as the game's visible point of contact with its inspiration — and keep The Walten Files' own story out of any reading of Caretakers, because no series event, character or timeline imports into this game on current evidence. The hunter's observed behavior in normal play is broken down further in the Caretakers Bon guide.

Story Mode: announced, not playable

Only Survival Mode is listed on the official page for the released game, which separately states "Story Mode Chapter 1 coming soon." Two independent full-session recordings show nothing but survival rounds — objectives, a hunter, an escape when the exit opens — which fits that status as of when they were filmed. Only "Chapter 1" is ever named anywhere; no later chapter is mentioned. One caveat: the page snapshot is undated, so "coming soon" reflects the moment it was captured and may have changed since — the updates page tracks the current status.

If you would rather find these clues yourself, everything above is reachable in normal Survival rounds. The Caretakers secrets guide collects the spots where players keep finding safes, tapes and the rest of the story material.
